Yoga posture practice, which is only one branch of yoga practice, is one of the surprising phenomena of contemporary culture.

It is not so long ago, less than forty years, that if you were doing yoga you were a little odd. Yoga, back then, was refered do, disparagingly, with epithets such as ‘navel-gazing’ and regarded as at best a harmless but useless self-indulgence, and at worst a step towards madness already taken. Times have changed, though some of the old prejudices have not. The remarkable surge in its popularity over the last twenty years has not only turned yoga into a significant niche in the dominant market culture of our times, but a multi-billion dollar one at that. In raising its cultural profile so dramatically yoga has incurred the almost delirious wrath of religious fundamentalists.

Some Hindu’s complain about cultural distortion, misrepresentation and theft. Some Christians condemn it as an auto-erotic cult driven by the Antichrist, while in Egypt a fatwa was declared against it a few years back. More recently a long running current of concern in the medical profession has exploded into a heated debate about its physical effects, in which yoga teachers themselves are not only admitting, but announcing its potential dangers.

Given that yoga has one of the oldest and most successful marketing campaigns of human history, perhaps it should be no surprise that it is finally eliciting such a stormy backlash. Even though postural practices have been associated with yoga for hundreds of years at least, it may well be that the extreme and varied physicality of its contemporary popularity are a more modern development, as some scholars have recently argued. When postural practices are presented as yoga, then they are bound to be, explicitly or implicitly, associated with the remarkable, and alluring, claims that have long been made in its name. These claims are much more broad and deep than those made for any other product available in our hyperbolic market culture, and include freedom from all suffering, perpetual peace, wisdom and compassion. This is not to mention a number of other notions as seductive to some as they are indefinable such as enlightenment, grace and Self-realisation.

When such grandiose promises are associated with extremes of physical exercise it should really be no surprise that anyone with a little spare time and a touch of dissatisfaction should give it a go. Even less so given the adulation and envy inspired by some of its more high-profile fans, including Madonna and Sting no less. It always feels good to use your body. It feels especially good to use your body systematically and repeatedly, and in the company of others with whom you can identify. The tribal aspect of yoga is one that has been successfully manipulated by a number of savvy yoga gurus as they drive their brands deeper into the global market. Insidiously linked with people’s need to belong are those vague, mystical promises that touch a raw nerve in almost everyone driven along in the frenzy of a competitive culture.

At the same time there is more to the feel-good factor of intense physical exercise than developing your physical assets as you put them to use, there is also the chemical factor. We are almost all using drugs to get us through the day: caffeine, tannin, nicotine, sucrose, dextrose and alcohol, to name but the more popular and legal ones. Yoga has reached the mainstream by way of the cultural margins of New Age disestablishmentarianism. In doing so it has often been taken up by those experimenting with dietary cults, and other forms of unsubstantiated self-improvement. Yet extreme physical exertion is perhaps the easiest and most time-honoured way of getting high. Push your body hard enough and it will respond chemically. Push it against its limits and it will produce endorphins to mask the strain imposed on vulnerable tissues.

It is not so hard to see that this unrecognised expression of drug use could be the driving force behind the popularity of yoga. It allows you get high, as often as you want, while comforting you with a self-righteous catechism of spiritual accomplishment. Self deception has probably never had such a field day as it is having in yoga classes throughout the world.

Even though yoga styles and yoga brands are two-a-penny most of the differences between them are very superficial, and not enough to satisfy a rigorous taxonomist of their claims to being different. You will find at least some of the following in almost every yoga class: incense, chanting, foreign names and words, tight-fitting designer clothes, Eastern cultural icons, esoteric tribal jewelry, tattoos, a mystical verbal or musical soundtrack and/or upbeat exhortations from seductive instructors, all contextualized in an obvious, even if unacknowledged, competitiveness. What they almost all have in common, although in subtly different forms, is the pursuit of an idealised physical standard. This may be based on flexibility, strength, alignment, stress-release or any combination thereof. It is almost impossible to find a yoga teacher, brand or style that is not offering, or even promising, a seductive physical reward, along with more esoteric promises. Yoga posture practice, at least in its most popular and visible forms, is an unashamed practice of self-improvement: emotional, psychological and spiritual, as well as physical.

Can this even be yoga?

Only if we can see and say what yoga is can we know whether it is physically dangerous, and even whether it is available. Literary evidence shows Yoga existing, under that name, in India for over two thousands years. Given that even one thousand years ago Indian cultural knowledge and know-how were transmitted orally, it could be thousands older. Yoga is in fact one of the six investigative approaches underlying the richness and sophistication of Indian culture in much the same way that mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology underpin ‘Western’ culture. Of those ‘Darshana’, Yoga is the practical one, whereby those driven by the urge for truth could experience their own nature directly.

Patanjali is to yoga what Newton is to physics. In his text ‘The Yoga Sutras’ he defines it in the second chapter with five words: activity, yoga, passion, self-enquiry and surrender. Of course these English words are not an exact fit with the sanskrit ones used by their author. Some, or even most of them, would be disputed by many. Not the fourth one, however. Self-enquiry is the heart and essence of yoga, no matter what form it takes, phsyical, psychological or behavioural. To some yogis, including the celebrated Ramana Maharshi, yoga is self-enquiry pure and simple.

If this is so, then all the grandiose claims associated with the word, and practices, of yoga emerge from Self-enquiry, as theOracle of Delphi would agree no less that Socrates. In order for postural practice to then be yoga it must be a process of genuine Self-enquiry, rather than self-improvement. The difference between them is the difference between Charles Atlasand Ramana Maharshi. Genuine enquiry is not a covert attempt to reach a preferred conclusion, or prove a point. Yoga practice, in any form, must be based on what is and not what is hoped for. Self-enquiry depends on a willingness and ability to examine your self just as you are, putting aside all preference and prejudice and the self-deception they generate.

Yoga posture practice can actually be a potent means for conducting effective self-enquiry all the way from the body, through mind to consciousness. For this to be possible it must not be based on ambition, tradition, geometry or assumption. It must be based on the intelligence of the body, through which it protects and nourishes itself. The sensations that express the integrity and intelligence of the body must be the compass of yoga posture practice. There needs to be more to this than just feeling what happens when you throw your body into this shape or linger in that one. You need to be able to respond to those sensations so that your body has no need to generate the euphoric endorphins that mask strain and injury. You need to honour in action what the intelligence of your body is saying from its inherent impulse towards wholeness and integrity.

For this you need to use the intelligence of your mind to interpret the significance of the sensations generated by your body. As your mind enquires more deeply into the significance of physical sensation it will encounter the nature and relationship between body, mind and spirit. In order to do so you will have to access the deep core of your being. In doing that you will find out whether the grandiose claims made for yoga, for Self-enquiry are justifiable. At the same time you need not put the vulnerabilities of your body at risk in the vain pursuit of flexibility, strength or alignment.

In short, no matter what your ‘yoga teacher’ says, no matter how high-profile the brand or how many tribal confederates share your articles of faith, it is very unlikely that you have ever practiced yoga. At least not while telling yourself that you were. If, however, you have ever sat down to really, honestly question your motives, experience, assumptions and values: you almost certainly have.

Unintimidated by the ideologies and hierarchies of tradition he has been able to cast clear light on the subtleties of yoga practice, developing a systematic exploration of the relationship between body, mind and consciousness as expressions of a single spectrum of intelligence. Relying as it does on the inherent intelligence of the body, rather than flexibility, skill or strength, his training method allows anyone to enjoy a seamless transition from separateness to integration, without losing touch with what makes each one of us distinct and unique.

Godfrey’s pioneering journey into the roots of human experience is grounded in a lifetime of yoga practice on mat and cushion that began when he was 16 years old. Fertilised by professional training in Child Development and Education, Oriental Medicine, and dedicated study with masters of Zen, Advaita and Tantra as well as Indian Yoga Gurus, Godfrey’s practice has brought him to a deep, lucid intimacy with the subtleties of being human, within which its apparent paradoxes are all heart‐warmingly resolved. At the heart of his teaching is a presentation of yoga as unity, rather than union. To find out one way that Posture Practice can be Yoga, please visit here or here. To enjoy a cogent and relevant intepretation of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, please visit here or here.

During Pregnancy, yoga practice can take on a whole new dimension, indeed pregnancy is known to be an ideal time for women to begin yoga, or to take an existing practice to new and wonderful levels, as women’s awareness and sensitivity naturally expands during this time, and naturally have a tendency to become more attuned to nature, and a connection within.

Yoga Naturally are very happy to be offering a very beautiful course to help empower women, and them make the most of this very special time, with ease and comfort, through a wide range of beneficial and nurturing techniques, which will be of valuable help in coping with the various and fluctuating stages of pregnancy. Each woman will be given very individual attention, taking into full consideration what is suitable at each stage of pregnancy and for her particular needs, and also will be constantly encouraged to increasingly respond to her inner teacher, so she will have these useful tools at her fingertips, whenever the need arises.

During the Pregnancy Yoga Course we will focus on yoga practice which:

keep the body supple without straining

boost energy

relieves stress and anxiety

relax and promot restful sleep

can be used to relieve pain in labour and childbirth

can relieve common minor ailments during pregnancy
(e.g. swollen joints, heartburn, constipation)

can help the expectant mother to bond with the unborn baby through breathing and visualisation techniques

The programme of weekly classes offers a comprehensive system for learning and using yoga throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and beyond. Students learn simple but effective breath and relaxation techniques, yoga postures to manage common physical ailments, and visualisation practices to build confidence and assist in easeful birth.

The classes offer an holistic programme of breathwork, relaxation, postures, movement and meditations suited to all stages of pregnancy, from 12 – 42 weeks, however women before this time are welcome to be in touch and discuss the possibilities of attending for relaxation. Pregnancy yoga enhances the vitality, mobility, general health and emotional well-being of the expectant mother; it also provides a valuable quiet space in which to form a bond with the unborn child and to prepare for birth.

The movement and stillness in the class is meditative and deeply relaxing and each student receives very individual attention.

The cost of the classes will be £90 for a course of 7 x 1.5 hour classes, or £15 per class. There will be a maximum of 8 in the class.

Anaiya, co-author of Womb Wisdom, is bringing her expression of this body of work that can reactivate the deep, inherent, often forgotten feminine power within us. It is a vital key to dissolving the problems in modern-day relationships and to entering into a Soul Mate Union with the heart in union with the womb, in relationship. Here is the practical and realistic path that brings women and men together as one. The clear knowledge of the mystical meaning of the seven gates towards the personal and cosmic womb space.

In the past and in present-day sacred traditions, women have known that the womb houses the greatest power a woman possesses: the power to create on all levels. Utilized in the process of giving birth, this power of creation can also be tapped in the birth of projects, careers, personal healing, spirituality, and relationships. However, because the womb stores the energetic imprint of every intimate encounter–loving or not–the creative voice of the womb is often muffled or absent altogether, affecting the emotional, mental, and spiritual health of women and their relationships.

Our day together will be spent delving into the first four gates, which I call ‘the personal journey’ towards the womb space and our healing of sexuality. Gates 1-4 contain our personal experiences in relationship to our sexuality, past relationships and how we truly feel about the opposite gender.

This workshop will cover practices that:

Clear your (sexual) past, open the womb’s energetic pathways, release toxic emotions, and ignite creative potential

Prepare you for the path of conscious relating (Soul Mate Union), relationships that are fulfilling and deeply intimate

Erase contracts and toxic bonds

Establish an authentic connection with your “Pure and Awakened Womaness”

Reveals how the awakened womb can also bring about male spiritual transformation

“Womb Wisdom: Awakening the Creative and Forgotten Powers of the Feminine,” is now available worldwide with Inner Traditions / Bear and Company.

Following a few years travelling around the world teaching, and a short stint in North London, we are very happy to be settled and to be opening our new yoga studio in Blackheath at the end of October. We’ve created a beautiful, light and restful space looking out onto the exquisite garden, and have been enjoying practicing and teaching yoga here in the morning and in the golden, dappled sunlight in the late afternoon and early evening…

We’ve been keen to make our space as comfortable, healthy and environmentally friendly place to be as possible. Having looking into several heating options, we were very impressed with the benefits of infrared, not only from the point of view of the planet, but also to peoples health, and so decided to install some infrared panels to see our studio through the winter. You can read more about the beneficial effects of infrared by clicking on ‘The Place’ in the Yoga Naturally menu.

In addition to this, we have installed some natural light bulbs and ionisers, to further bring the benefits of nature indoors, cleaning the air, and also to provide the beneficial effects of sunlight, giving a boost to our energy and mood, when daylight is lacking in the darker winter months.

The space is bright with light coloured walls and floor, catching the afternoon and evening sun. We will use the daylight bulbs at times in the daytime classes, and perhaps during part of an early evening class. The rest of the time the classes will be by soft lamps and candlelight.

Private classes have already begun, but we will be starting two new six week Foundation Courses in Dynamic Yoga in November on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, please read the section about “Course Content” for more information. These classes can be done as a course, or on a drop in basis. Annette will be teaching most of these classes. And as for those who like to get up a bit earlier and make a wonderful start to the day, Sebastian will be teaching six weeks of early morning yoga classes on Wednesdays.

While having both trained in depth with the same yoga master Godfrey Devereux, Annette and Sebastian’s teaching styles vary slightly. Both base there teaching firmly in the clarity of the Dynamic Yoga Method, and you will find that the styles will be complementary to each other.

We will be adding more classes, new courses and also longer weekend workshops soon, so please keep an eye out. We wish you a warm welcome and look forward to seeing you and embarking on a wonderful yoga journey with you.

Annette
